Renting a car in Maui
Maui without a car is a resort-only trip; the island is the attraction.
| Airports served | OGG (Kahului) |
| Tolls | No toll roads in Hawaii |
| Typical drive times | Lahaina 45 min · Hana 2h30 each way · Haleakala summit 2h · Wailea 35 min |
| Parking | Resort parking is charged nightly; trailhead parking fills early |
| Busiest months | December to March and June to August |
| Minimum driver age | Usually 21, with a young-driver surcharge under 25 |
Drive times are typical off-peak figures and toll arrangements change. Your agent confirms anything critical for your specific booking in writing before you commit.
What the car is actually for
- The island’s attractions are spread far apart with no transit between them
- The Road to Hana is the trip most visitors come for and needs a full day
- Island fleet limits make late booking a real risk
How collecting the car works
You approve a written all-in total from a named agent. Nothing is reserved before that.
We send the rental supplier’s own confirmation number, in your name. You can verify it with them directly.
You present your licence and a card in the main driver’s name at the counter, and they take the deposit.
You sign the rental agreement with the supplier, not with us. What you need to bring.
What catches people out in Maui
The Road to Hana takes the whole day
Two and a half hours each way on a narrow, winding road with hundreds of bends and one-lane bridges. Start early, and pick a class you are comfortable placing on a tight road rather than the biggest available.
Some routes breach the rental agreement
Sections beyond Hana and parts of the back road are unpaved or explicitly excluded by many suppliers, and driving them typically voids coverage. Ask us what your supplier’s terms actually permit before you commit to the loop.
Classes we quote most in Maui
US rentals are booked by class, never by model — every confirmation in the industry reads “or similar”.
Compact
- 5 seats
- 2 bags
- Easy to park
One size up from economy. Noticeably better on the interstate, still small enough for old downtowns and tight garages.

- Higher seating
The most requested class in the US. Higher seating position, more usable boot, and all-wheel drive on many models.

What we will not claim about Maui
- We do not publish a headline daily rate here. A rate without your dates, class and driver age is not information.
- We are not claiming to be the cheapest option for this market. Sometimes a corporate or loyalty rate booked direct beats anything we can quote, and we will say so.
- We do not state any rental company’s deposit, card or age policy as fixed. Those are theirs, they differ by branch, and we confirm yours in writing instead.
- Odovera is an independent travel agency, not a car rental company. The vehicle is supplied by the rental company you sign with at the counter.
Car rental in Maui — asked and answered
Can I drive the full loop past Hana?
Many supplier agreements exclude the unpaved sections beyond Hana, and driving them can void your coverage. Tell us if the full loop matters and we will check whose terms permit it.
How early should I book for Maui?
Well ahead in peak months. Island fleets cannot be reinforced from elsewhere, so availability rather than rate is what runs out.
Is Odovera a car rental company?
No. Odovera is an independent travel agency, a brand of Affluence Hospitality LLC. We arrange reservations with third-party rental suppliers on your behalf and are not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by any rental brand. You sign the rental agreement with the supplier at the counter, under their terms.
Does it cost more than booking direct?
Usually not. On most bookings the supplier pays us a commission out of the rate you were going to pay anyway. Where a service fee applies instead, it is shown as its own line on the quote before you approve anything. Where booking direct genuinely wins — a corporate rate, loyalty status — we tell you.
