Renting a car in New York
Manhattan is the strongest case in the country for not renting a car for your whole stay.
| Airports served | JFK, LGA, EWR — plus dozens of neighbourhood branches |
| Tolls | E-ZPass. Nearly every bridge and tunnel into the city is tolled and cashless |
| Typical drive times | Hudson Valley 1h30 · Catskills 2h30 · Jersey Shore 1h30 · Boston 4h |
| Parking | Manhattan garages charge per night; street parking is restricted and actively ticketed |
| Busiest months | Summer weekends and the late-September to October leaf run |
| Minimum driver age | Usually 21, with a young-driver surcharge under 25 |
Drive times are typical off-peak figures and toll arrangements change. Your agent confirms anything critical for your specific booking in writing before you commit.
What the car is actually for
- Everything worth driving to is outside the five boroughs
- Neighbourhood branches let you skip the airport concession fees entirely
- One-ways into New England and the mid-Atlantic are widely available
How collecting the car works
You approve a written all-in total from a named agent. Nothing is reserved before that.
We send the rental supplier’s own confirmation number, in your name. You can verify it with them directly.
You present your licence and a card in the main driver’s name at the counter, and they take the deposit.
You sign the rental agreement with the supplier, not with us. What you need to bring.
What catches people out in New York
Parking is the entire calculation
A car sitting in a Manhattan garage for three days can cost more than the rental itself. Starting the hire on the morning you leave town is usually cheaper than keeping it from the airport, and we will price both before you decide.
Branch hours are not airport hours
Midtown, Brooklyn and Queens locations have shorter days, smaller fleets and reduced weekend cover. A Sunday morning pickup needs checking rather than assuming.
Classes we quote most in New York
US rentals are booked by class, never by model — every confirmation in the industry reads “or similar”.
Compact
- 5 seats
- 2 bags
- Easy to park
One size up from economy. Noticeably better on the interstate, still small enough for old downtowns and tight garages.
What this class really meansMidsize sedan
- 5 seats
- 3 bags
- Long-drive comfort
The default American road-trip car. Comfortable at highway speed for hours, sensible on fuel, big enough for a family of four with luggage.
What this class really meansCompact SUV
- 5 seats
- 3 bags
- Higher seating
The most requested class in the US. Higher seating position, more usable boot, and all-wheel drive on many models.

- 5–7 seats
- 4 bags
- Optional third row
Midsize SUVs, sometimes with a small third row. The usual pick for a family of four with a lot of gear.

What we will not claim about New York
- We do not publish a headline daily rate here. A rate without your dates, class and driver age is not information.
- We are not claiming to be the cheapest option for this market. Sometimes a corporate or loyalty rate booked direct beats anything we can quote, and we will say so.
- We do not state any rental company’s deposit, card or age policy as fixed. Those are theirs, they differ by branch, and we confirm yours in writing instead.
- Odovera is an independent travel agency, not a car rental company. The vehicle is supplied by the rental company you sign with at the counter.
Car rental in New York — asked and answered
Is it cheaper to rent in Manhattan or at JFK?
Often Manhattan, because airport locations carry concession recovery fees that neighbourhood branches do not. But it depends on your dates and how many days the car sits parked. Tell us the itinerary and we will price both.
Can I drop a New York rental in Boston or Washington?
Usually yes. One-ways along the corridor are common, and the drop fee is the number that varies most between suppliers for the same route — which is exactly what we check before quoting.
Is Odovera a car rental company?
No. Odovera is an independent travel agency, a brand of Affluence Hospitality LLC. We arrange reservations with third-party rental suppliers on your behalf and are not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by any rental brand. You sign the rental agreement with the supplier at the counter, under their terms.
Does it cost more than booking direct?
Usually not. On most bookings the supplier pays us a commission out of the rate you were going to pay anyway. Where a service fee applies instead, it is shown as its own line on the quote before you approve anything. Where booking direct genuinely wins — a corporate rate, loyalty status — we tell you.
