Renting a car in Reno
Reno is a gateway rather than a destination; the car is for Tahoe.
| Airports served | RNO |
| Tolls | No toll roads in Nevada |
| Typical drive times | North Lake Tahoe 45 min · South Lake Tahoe 1h15 · Truckee 40 min · Sacramento 2h |
| Parking | Easy in Reno; Tahoe resort parking is paid and limited in season |
| Busiest months | Ski season, plus Burning Man week and major events |
| Minimum driver age | Usually 21, with a young-driver surcharge under 25 |
Drive times are typical off-peak figures and toll arrangements change. Your agent confirms anything critical for your specific booking in writing before you commit.
What the car is actually for
- Tahoe is the destination and has no rail connection
- Winter pass conditions make the vehicle a practical decision
- Event weeks empty the local fleet entirely
How collecting the car works
You approve a written all-in total from a named agent. Nothing is reserved before that.
We send the rental supplier’s own confirmation number, in your name. You can verify it with them directly.
You present your licence and a card in the main driver’s name at the counter, and they take the deposit.
You sign the rental agreement with the supplier, not with us. What you need to bring.
What catches people out in Reno
Winter passes are the whole question
Chain controls apply on the routes into Tahoe in winter conditions. Many suppliers prohibit fitting chains to their vehicles, and AWD is never guaranteed by booking an SUV class. Settle both before you book, not at the counter.
Event weeks empty a small fleet
Reno’s fleet is modest. Major events clear it completely, and in those weeks availability is the constraint rather than price.
Classes we quote most in Reno
US rentals are booked by class, never by model — every confirmation in the industry reads “or similar”.
Midsize sedan
- 5 seats
- 3 bags
- Long-drive comfort
The default American road-trip car. Comfortable at highway speed for hours, sensible on fuel, big enough for a family of four with luggage.
What this class really meansCompact SUV
- 5 seats
- 3 bags
- Higher seating
The most requested class in the US. Higher seating position, more usable boot, and all-wheel drive on many models.

- 5–7 seats

- Optional third row
Midsize SUVs, sometimes with a small third row. The usual pick for a family of four with a lot of gear.

What we will not claim about Reno
- We do not publish a headline daily rate here. A rate without your dates, class and driver age is not information.
- We are not claiming to be the cheapest option for this market. Sometimes a corporate or loyalty rate booked direct beats anything we can quote, and we will say so.
- We do not state any rental company’s deposit, card or age policy as fixed. Those are theirs, they differ by branch, and we confirm yours in writing instead.
- Odovera is an independent travel agency, not a car rental company. The vehicle is supplied by the rental company you sign with at the counter.
Car rental in Reno — asked and answered
Can I fit chains to a Reno rental for Tahoe?
Many suppliers prohibit it. That is why the AWD conversation has to happen at booking — we will tell you which suppliers permit what on your dates.
How far is Tahoe from the airport?
Forty-five minutes to the north shore, about seventy-five to the south, in good conditions. Winter weather can extend both substantially.
Is Odovera a car rental company?
No. Odovera is an independent travel agency, a brand of Affluence Hospitality LLC. We arrange reservations with third-party rental suppliers on your behalf and are not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by any rental brand. You sign the rental agreement with the supplier at the counter, under their terms.
Does it cost more than booking direct?
Usually not. On most bookings the supplier pays us a commission out of the rate you were going to pay anyway. Where a service fee applies instead, it is shown as its own line on the quote before you approve anything. Where booking direct genuinely wins — a corporate rate, loyalty status — we tell you.
