Renting a car in San Diego
Downtown and the Gaslamp work on foot; the coast and north county do not.
| Airports served | SAN — rentals at a consolidated centre reached by shuttle |
| Tolls | Minimal; SR-125 south of the city is the main tolled route |
| Typical drive times | La Jolla 20 min · Temecula 1h · Palm Springs 2h30 · Los Angeles 2h |
| Parking | Beach-area parking is tight from late spring; downtown garages charge per night |
| Busiest months | June to September, though the market is steadier than most |
| Minimum driver age | Usually 21, with a young-driver surcharge under 25 |
Drive times are typical off-peak figures and toll arrangements change. Your agent confirms anything critical for your specific booking in writing before you commit.
What the car is actually for
- The north county beaches and the mountains are spread along an hour of coast
- Seasonality is mild, so late availability is usually better than in Florida or Hawaii
- Day trips to Temecula and the desert need a car
How collecting the car works
You approve a written all-in total from a named agent. Nothing is reserved before that.
We send the rental supplier’s own confirmation number, in your name. You can verify it with them directly.
You present your licence and a card in the main driver’s name at the counter, and they take the deposit.
You sign the rental agreement with the supplier, not with us. What you need to bring.
What catches people out in San Diego
Do not assume you can cross into Mexico
Driving a US rental into Mexico is prohibited by most suppliers, and where permitted it needs prior arrangement and separate Mexican insurance. Raise it before booking, not at the border.
Beach parking in season
La Jolla, Pacific Beach and Coronado fill from late spring onward. A smaller car is materially easier to place and cheaper to run.
Classes we quote most in San Diego
US rentals are booked by class, never by model — every confirmation in the industry reads “or similar”.
Compact
- 5 seats
- 2 bags
- Easy to park
One size up from economy. Noticeably better on the interstate, still small enough for old downtowns and tight garages.

- Long-drive comfort
The default American road-trip car. Comfortable at highway speed for hours, sensible on fuel, big enough for a family of four with luggage.

What we will not claim about San Diego
- We do not publish a headline daily rate here. A rate without your dates, class and driver age is not information.
- We are not claiming to be the cheapest option for this market. Sometimes a corporate or loyalty rate booked direct beats anything we can quote, and we will say so.
- We do not state any rental company’s deposit, card or age policy as fixed. Those are theirs, they differ by branch, and we confirm yours in writing instead.
- Odovera is an independent travel agency, not a car rental company. The vehicle is supplied by the rental company you sign with at the counter.
Car rental in San Diego — asked and answered
Can I take the rental to Tijuana?
Almost certainly not without prior arrangement. Most suppliers prohibit it outright. Tell us if Baja is in your plan and we will find out who permits it, if anyone does on your dates.
Is San Diego a market where I need to book early?
Less than Hawaii or Florida — seasonality here is unusually mild. Rates still move with events, so early booking helps, but late availability is generally better.
Is Odovera a car rental company?
No. Odovera is an independent travel agency, a brand of Affluence Hospitality LLC. We arrange reservations with third-party rental suppliers on your behalf and are not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by any rental brand. You sign the rental agreement with the supplier at the counter, under their terms.
Does it cost more than booking direct?
Usually not. On most bookings the supplier pays us a commission out of the rate you were going to pay anyway. Where a service fee applies instead, it is shown as its own line on the quote before you approve anything. Where booking direct genuinely wins — a corporate rate, loyalty status — we tell you.
