Car rental in Salt Lake City
Salt Lake City is the gateway to two very different trips: the Cottonwood canyon ski resorts an hour away, and the southern Utah national parks four hours south.
Renting a car in Salt Lake City
Downtown has light rail, but the canyons and the parks need a car.
| Airports served | SLC |
| Tolls | No toll roads in Utah |
| Typical drive times | Park City 45 min · Little Cottonwood 45 min · Moab 3h45 · Zion 4h15 |
| Parking | Downtown is metered; resort parking is paid and reserved in peak weeks |
| Busiest months | Ski season December to March, parks season May to September |
| Minimum driver age | Usually 21, with a young-driver surcharge under 25 |
Drive times are typical off-peak figures and toll arrangements change. Your agent confirms anything critical for your specific booking in writing before you commit.
What the car is actually for
- The canyon resorts have no rail and limited bus capacity in peak weeks
- The southern Utah parks loop is a long drive with no alternative
- Winter access rules make the vehicle choice consequential
How collecting the car works
You approve a written all-in total from a named agent. Nothing is reserved before that.
We send the rental supplier’s own confirmation number, in your name. You can verify it with them directly.
You present your licence and a card in the main driver’s name at the counter, and they take the deposit.
You sign the rental agreement with the supplier, not with us. What you need to bring.
What catches people out in Salt Lake City
Canyon traction rules are enforced
Access to the Cottonwood canyons is restricted in winter conditions and checked. Booking an SUV class does not guarantee all-wheel drive at any US supplier — it must be requested specifically, and even then it is a request rather than a guarantee.
The parks loop is a mileage question
Zion, Bryce, Arches and Canyonlands from Salt Lake is a long circuit. Confirm any mileage cap before booking and size the class for hours in the seat, not for the headline rate.
Classes we quote most in Salt Lake City
US rentals are booked by class, never by model — every confirmation in the industry reads “or similar”.
Compact SUV
- 5 seats
- 3 bags
- Higher seating
The most requested class in the US. Higher seating position, more usable boot, and all-wheel drive on many models.

What we will not claim about Salt Lake City
- We do not publish a headline daily rate here. A rate without your dates, class and driver age is not information.
- We are not claiming to be the cheapest option for this market. Sometimes a corporate or loyalty rate booked direct beats anything we can quote, and we will say so.
- We do not state any rental company’s deposit, card or age policy as fixed. Those are theirs, they differ by branch, and we confirm yours in writing instead.
- Odovera is an independent travel agency, not a car rental company. The vehicle is supplied by the rental company you sign with at the counter.
Car rental in Salt Lake City — asked and answered
Do I need AWD for the ski canyons?
Traction requirements apply in winter conditions and are enforced. Request AWD specifically — but understand that no US supplier guarantees drivetrain by vehicle class, and we will tell you exactly what was agreed.
Can I fit ski racks?
Usually as a paid add-on, with thin availability in peak weeks. Chains are prohibited by many suppliers. Settle both before booking rather than at the counter.
Is Odovera a car rental company?
No. Odovera is an independent travel agency, a brand of Affluence Hospitality LLC. We arrange reservations with third-party rental suppliers on your behalf and are not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by any rental brand. You sign the rental agreement with the supplier at the counter, under their terms.
Does it cost more than booking direct?
Usually not. On most bookings the supplier pays us a commission out of the rate you were going to pay anyway. Where a service fee applies instead, it is shown as its own line on the quote before you approve anything. Where booking direct genuinely wins — a corporate rate, loyalty status — we tell you.
